Your journey starts here...
In Murrin Bridge, a small Aboriginal
community located on the banks of the Lachlan river, a few kilometres
north of Lake Cargelligo right in the heart of New South Wales.
Where the journey will take you is up to you. You might just want to
buy some of the wine which Murrin Bridge is famous for - "red wine,
white wine, black wine", as the slogan goes - from the only
Aboriginal-owned vineyard in Australia. You might wish to explore
Outback New South Wales, a region which has so much to offer to the
visitor, especially if travelling in a four-wheel drive. Or you could
take Murrin Bridge as your starting point for getting to know
Aboriginal Australia.
When you
come to Murrin Bridge you meet true Australians, the descendants of the
people who have lived on the continent for tens of thousands of years.
Murrin Bridge is located in Wiradjuri country although most of its
people can trace their roots back to the Ngiyampaa and Paakintji
tribes: this is because Murrin Bridge started off as a "mission", a
place set up by the government to accommodate Aboriginals driven out of
their traditional lands. For
the Ngiyampaa and Paakintji people, these traditional lands lie to the
north and west of Murrin Bridge, to places as far away as Menindee,
Wilcannia, Mildura and Brewarrina.
Today, Murrin Bridge is no longer a mission but a thriving community
running its own affairs, on its own land. This website portrays that
community, its people and their many talents, its businesses,
activities, and history. Murrin Bridge is a perfect place to start
exploring outback New South Wales and Aboriginal Australia.
